Interview: Mitchell Coleman Jr

Where are you from?
I was born in Meridian Mississippi. Raised in Cuba Alabama and Connecticut.

What is your earliest memory of music?
Listening to my Mother sing around the house and going to my cousins house who was an upcoming DJ. He had everything I could think of as far as variety.

When did you start being an artist?
I think I was always an artist at heart. But more exact, when I started having interest in playing an instrument. I Starting with the baritone horn and then the Tenor Saxophone and later the bass guitar where I made my home.

How would you describe your style?
I play or favor a fusion of Funk and Jazz. Or smooth Jazz as they say. Funk is vehicle and Jazz is the journey.

Are there any particular themes or messages that you often explore in your music?
I try to stay on the positive side. I love to inspire and uplift.

What is the meaning behind your stage name?
I don’t really have a stage name other than the ones given while I am performing.
Like Sir Thump a lot. Because most of what I have done is based off thumping or the use of the Thump to achieve the funk element.

What is the story behind your most famous song?
My last two songs where based off childhood memories. For example Gun Slinger.
Was based off the Westerns my Father and I would watch together waiting with anticipation of the Gun fight at the end. And Glide, and inspirational to keep on keeping on despite what the world may throw at you.

What is the hardest thing about being an artist?
For me it has been the ability to express myself in my music. I grew up learning to cover up my true emotions. Especially if they are considered soft or weak. Music seems to demand my truth be revealed. That is the only way I can be truthful to my audience and myself. But it is not easy.

What’s the best thing about being an artist?

Having the ability to express myself through my art.

What are your goals for your music career?
To continue to develop my craft. To keep it enjoyable and to be an inspiration to the coming generation.

What do you like to do in your free time (outside of music)?
I enjoy practicing martial arts, restoring classic cars and hanging out with great friends.

Do you get involved with charities or causes that are important to you?

I have not but will be a lot more involved with Cancer research, especially Breast Cancer. My Mother died from this horrible disease. It devastates families and leaves a wake of destruction that is very difficult to overcome.
Yeah, this must GO AWAY!
What is something that people would be surprised to know about you?
That despite my hard exterior, I am a teddy bear.

What does a typical day look like for you?
Wake up, Pray, eat breakfast , exercise, practice, practice, practice……..Work come home practice, do some gardening, eat , practice ………sleep dream of practicing.

Do you have any upcoming projects we can be excited about?
Yes, the single Rising coming out very soon. And the Dedication album for my mother who I mentioned earlier, passed from breast cancer.

What are some of the standout tracks on your latest project?
Rising is one tract to look out for. Everything coming together for a very nice fusion of Funk and Jazz.

What are your favorite topics to write about?
Love and inspiration

How do you deal with creative block or artist block?
By stepping away and letting it come on its own. I cannot just make up something.
The music actually comes on its own time. I just have to be to prepared vessel to be able to express it tangibly.

What is the best advice anyone has ever given you?
Seek not that which is seen, but that which is not. For that which is seen is temporary. But the things that are not are eternal. Bible. 2 Corinthians 4:18

What was the best show or tour you have ever been on?
Stay tuned for that answer.

What’s been your favorite moment of your career so far? Where can people find your music online?
Meeting Michael B Sutton and The Sound of LA has been one of my favorite moments, due to the possibilities that meeting brought and will bring.
God Bless
