Interview: Lucas Roy

Where are you from? – I grew up in a small town in Southern Maine called “Lyman”. It was great being a part of a small community, and A lot of my personality, ethics, and interests stem from growing up in such a tight niche community.

What is your earliest memory of music? – When I was really young, my parents would always listen to 90’s country music. I have some really vivid memories of singing 90’s country songs every day in the car. Oh and also the Billy Joel “Glass Houses” album!

When did you start being an artist? -The first time I ever performed I was 16 years old. I sang “Drift Away” by Dobie Grey. I’ll never forget the anticipation of the moment and the way it felt to get on the stage for the first time.

How would you describe your style? Indie Singer/songwriter for sure. Pop leaning.

Are there any particular themes or messages that you often explore in your music? -I try to write about everyday occurrences and things that I’ve experienced directly.

What is the meaning behind your stage name? – It’s my born name 8)

What is the story behind your most famous song? -I wrote the song “Courage of My Youth” after getting into a little bit of legal trouble. It felt like the world was ending,e ven though it was just a small hiccup in time.

What is the hardest thing about being an artist? -Comparisionidus. The constant feeling of not being good enough or not living up to the true potential I believe I have.

What’s the best thing about being an artist? -The feeling you get when you write your newest song. I love being immersed in a project to the point where I can’t stop thinking about it. Those are always the best days – when it’s impossible to walk away from the songwriting because you keep writing all day in your head.

What are your goals for your music career? – I’d love to keep building my catalog and someday be signed to a label for writing. Or on a writing team for a bigger artist then myself.

What do you like to do in your free time (outside of music)? -I basically never stop doing things. I love building projects and doing wood working. I also run a music and video production studio. So between writing, performing, and running the businesses, I have my hands full.

Do you get involved with charities or causes that are important to you? -I try to support the local community the best I can. Whether it’s raising money for kids or helping a local family in time of crisis, I try my best to support in anyway I can. Usually, through awareness or donating performances.

What is something that people would be surprised to know about you? -I have an accounting and finance degree and I’ve never had a “real” job.

What does a typical day look like for you? -Everyday is drastically different. I try to hit the gym 4 mornings a week, run errands in the early afternoon, and do projects or performances later in the evening.

Do you have any upcoming projects we can be excited about? -I will be releasing a new song, called “When She Ain’t Around” in September. I’m really looking forward to sharing it with everyone!

What are some of the standout tracks on your latest project? -My favorite track is my newest release, “Courage of my Youth”

How do you deal with creative block or artist block? -If I;m struggling to write something, I just stop. I go do something else. I try to seek inspiration from everyday conversations, or a song that lights me up.

What is the best advice anyone has ever given you? -Stop writing for other people and just write songs that are true to you.

What was the best show or tour you have ever been on? In 2018 I did a mini tour around Iceland. It was so beautiful, and the people are so kind there. I played three shows and met some incredible international artists.
