Interview: Flo Chase

Where are you from?

All over the place really. I was originally born in Paris and moved to New-Caledonia, a small French colonized island in the South Pacific Ocean soon after birth. At age 12, my family relocated to Noosa, which is a small surfing town in QLD, Australia. At the age of 17, I moved to Sydney NSW where I studied music and I have now been living in Los Angeles, California for five years.

What is your earliest memory of music?

I can recall seeing my parents play the guitar before I could even walk and always remember having music playing around the house.

When did you start being an artist?

I guess I made it official when I released my first EP in August 2017. I had been making and recording music for a little while before that, but I guess I can say I became active since then.

How would you describe your style?

That’s a tough question as it’s evolved and developed over the years but if I had to mention some of my roots it would be; singer-songwriter, indie pop folk with a slight reggae influence. My latest record and the music I am currently working on would be considered pop reggae fusion I guess.

Are there any particular themes or messages that you often explore in your music?

For the most part I either write from personal life experiences, current matters in the world and self-exploration.

What is the meaning behind your stage name?

My first name combined with a simple google search! I wish there was a cooler story attached to it but that’s literally how it originated.

What is the story behind your most famous song?

Criminals touches on pollution, the consumer society that we live in today and all the lies and misinforming communication we get feed daily. It also touches on hope and how only collectively we can choose to make a difference.

What is the hardest thing about being an artist?

I would say managing your time. There’s lots of ups and downs with music where you find yourself overwhelmed with countless shows and work to having several weeks of down time. This can definitely take a hit on your mental health, so I think it’s important to find other activities and stimulation to fill your time during those slower weeks or months.

What’s the best thing about being an artist?

Getting to do what you love most as your job.

What are your goals for your music career?

I would like to keep creating music and hopefully have it connect with more and more people. I guess my ultimate goal is to bring positivity and inspiration through the music I write.

What do you like to do in your free time (outside of music)?

I love to workout, play tennis, spend time with my family and friends and travel.

Do you get involved with charities or causes that are important to you?

Yes, I do, and I think it’s important for us to remember that a little help goes a long way.

What is something that people would be surprised to know about you?

I guess that French is my first language and that I grew up on a tiny island.

What does a typical day look like for you?

Coffee first always, do some email work, most likely either head to the studio to work on some music or rehearsals, go to the gym and fit in a game of tennis if I can.

Do you have any upcoming projects we can be excited about?

Yes, I’m about to release a brand-new single called ‘Found Myself’ on August 9th. I don’t think I’ve ever been as excited about new music so I can’t wait to see how people respond to it.

What are some of the standout tracks on your latest project?

I recently released my second studio album ‘Seasons’ earlier this year and some of the most successful songs from the record so far are; Criminals, Seasons, Cameo and Please Don’t Leave Me.

What are your favorite topics to write about?

Personal reflection on life experiences and growth as well as cultural influences and joy.

How do you deal with creative block or artist block?

I either try to collaborate and work with other people or take some time off to travel and experience new cultures and ways of life. These always tend to do the trick for me.

What is the best advice anyone has ever given you?

Treat others as you’d like to be treated.

What was the best show or tour you have ever been on?

I actually don’t have a whole lot of touring experience yet so I would mention a show I played in my hometown last year in my own venue. It was a special night playing some new music in my own venue for the first time and having my brother do the live sound made it that little bit more special too.

What’s been your favorite moment of your career so far? Where can people find your music online?

The people and connections I’ve been able to make along the way as well as some of the beautiful places I got to visit and see. They can find it anywhere really by simply looking up ‘Flo Chase’ or @flochasemusic.
