Interview: Pearl Earl

Where are you from?

I grew up in Fort Worth, Texas and lived in Denton for 10 years!

What is your earliest memory of music?

I have a specific memory of sitting on the toilet singing about butterflies when I was like three or four.

When did you start being an artist?

I wrote poems my whole life and didn’t realize I was actually a ‘poet’ until I was 19 and started playing guitar. I figured out I had actually been trying to write songs but was missing an element and had a eureka moment once I paired it all. I think when I picked up a guitar and started writing music was when I officially intended to become an artist.

How would you describe your style?

My style varies from song to song and project to project. In my early days I’ve explored folk and surfy styles to psychedelic and progressive rock styles to hip hop and even country and dark wave.

Are there any particular themes or messages that you often explore in your music?

One huge theme at least for the last record was the feeling of existential dread and trying to find your place in the universe. I’ve explored the theme of longing and loneliness and also more visual and cosmic themes like space and post apocalyptic worlds

What is the meaning behind your stage name?

I didn’t know what I wanted to call my project originally so I used my nick name I received in early college named Earl. I was on top of a mountain in Lake Tahoe and the idea of putting it with Pearl came to me and so I named my band that because I liked how it sounded.

What is the story behind your most famous song?

I’m not sure what our most famous song is but according to Spotify “Meet your maker” is the most played. That song came from the intro/ ending riff main riff and chorus riff I’d been playing with for a few years. I always had the chant “I want to meet your maker” pop in my head when I played the chorus riff and knew I wanted to write lyrics exploring what that means. It ended up being some of my favorite lyrics I’ve written for a song because I really hid a lot of Easter eggs in them. The politically charged song is basically a demand to meet the creator of a person or group of people be it a God or parent and ask them why/ how does your kind exist? How can police continue to shoot innocent black people ? How are lgbtq+ rights seen as mentally ill by politicians and their beliefs? Why would anyone vote for Donald a trump.. the list goes on.

What is the hardest thing about being an artist?

I think the hardest part about being an artist is that our government and current society is not designed for the arts to make a sustainable living to continue making and honing in on their craft. The music industry and its monetary design for artists and what is deemed as ‘successful’ can be very discouraging.

What’s the best thing about being an artist?

The best thing about being an artist is inspiring other people through music , and connecting people from all over the world together.

What are your goals for your music career?

To be honest I find that I am currently trying to recenter and figure out what my true goals and manifestations are. One of my biggest dreams of getting the band to Europe was recently fulfilled, we had a really busy year and finally released a sophomore album. I think it would be amazing to do a support tour for another band, we haven’t been able to do that yet! I would love to be able to record another album within the next year or two.

What do you like to do in your free time (outside of music)?

I enjoy getting out into nature, moving my body whether it’s hiking or Pilates, reading, eating amazing food. I’ve got a kitty I love to cuddle and I recently discovered I love to bead!

Do you get involved with charities or causes that are important to you?

I have tried to donate to causes and protest when I can. I wish I could do more especially with all that’s going on in the world but sometimes life itself is so hard to juggle.

What is something that people would be surprised to know about you?

Hmm.. maybe that I am a total nerd and get obsessed with different subjects of science and history and natural disasters from time to time. My last obsession was sharks and I cannot get them out of my social media feed now.

What does a typical day look like for you?

Typical day might look like sleeping until 9 and chugging a lot of water right when I wake up. Maybe making a green or chai tea because coffee is not my friend. Cuddling my cat because she wants attention in the morning. Might read for a second and then go on a walk or run by the river or go to a yoga class. Depending on the day I’ll probably be bartending somewhere at night and practice or write music somewhere in between!

Do you have any upcoming projects we can be excited about?

Unfortunately not right now! But I am so excited to be able to finally have a clear slate to start working on the next project, I’ve really needed some writing and reflecting time!

What are some of the standout tracks on your latest project?

Miss Milky Way’s Mental Breakdown and Alien Brew

What are your favorite topics to write about?

Cosmic conundrums and mind expansions

How do you deal with creative block or artist block? Still figuring that out myself but for me the inspiration to write can be sparse for months and then all of a sudden a little idea butterfly glimmers by and I’ll try and catch it really quick because I know how quickly it can disappear. I’ll drop everything and play with the idea and record it and most of the time come back to it if I don’t finish it. I do this for when I’m having a creative block because I’ll go back to old voice memos and get inspired by old ideas.

What is the best advice anyone has ever given you?

What other people think of you is not your business

What was the best show or tour you have ever been on? The tour we just did in Europe was one of the best. But the best show of this year I would say was at River Revival in New Braunfels, TX!

What’s been your favorite moment of your career so far?Where can people find your music online?

My favorite moment was getting on the plane to Paris. It was so surreal and special and even intimidating but it was what I had envisioned for myself and the band from its Texas beginnings.

Our music can be found on all the platforms !
